MD 4 is a north/south route connecting the St. Mary's Peninsula to Washington, DC, via the Western Shore of Chesapeake Bay. It begins at Point Lookout Road (MD 5) in Leonardtown and runs east across the St. Mary's Peninsula. It crosses the Patuxent River to Calvert County via the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. On the other side, it merges with Solomons Island Road (MD 2) to form a four-lane divided highway. The two routes are multiplexed for a substantial distance to the north. In Huntingtown, they split. Solomons Island Road splits off with the MD 2 designation, while MD 4 continues north along the divided highway as it changes names to become Southern Maryland Boulevard. In Lothian, Southern Maryland Boulevard becomes an expressway called the Stephanie Roper Highway and curves to the west toward Washington. In Upper Marlboro, the expressway ends, and MD 4 becomes Pennsylvania Avenue. There are three traffic lights, followed by an interchange with the Capital Beltway (I-495). Pennsylvania Avenue continues west into Washington, losing its numerical designation as it enters the District of Columbia.
